Three meals a day, education and culture, dignity, equality, and freedom, for all people.
As these things that Dr Martin Luther King Jr believed in and dedicated his life to achieving are being torn down all around us at speed, now more than ever is the time for us—’other-centered’—to continue to believe and to build together, in solidarity.
Solidarity as shared commitment, engaged action and mutual support, as the collective ‘we’, where those with power choose to move from being allies calling for change, to working alongside changemakers and sharing the risks and burdens of building a more just and abundant future together.
In the words of Dr King, “we are living in the creative turmoil of a genuine civilization struggling to be born.” This is the time to move from advocacy and empathy to active participation in creating the conditions for this more just and abundant world to be born.

Remembering Claudette Colvin: ‘resistance is collective and it never stops’.

At age 15, Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white person on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955. She was assaulted and arrested for it. Nine months later, Rosa Parks made the same refusal, and the Montgomery bus boycott began, led by Dr King. Claudette Colvin died last week, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, aged 86. In this article, a British journalist, author, and academic pays tribute to her bravery and examines the social dynamics that left her extraordinary action uncelebrated for so long.
